Read, and your Makito grows.

MAKA is a reading app with a companion of your own. Read for seven days and your Makito is born: one of only 150 felt dinosaurs. It reads with you, and grows with every page.

Your books, your reading time and your notes stay on your phone. No account needed to start.

How a Makito comes to life

Everyone starts with the same closed book. What happens next depends only on your reading.

Read

Start the timer when you open your book, paper or ebook, and note the page when you stop. Your Makito keeps you company while you read.

On the seventh day, the book opens

After seven different days of reading, your book opens and an egg rises from it. Inside is a dinosaur from the Grand Atlas, drawn for you at random.

It grows as you read

Every minute and every page counts. Finish books, keep the passages that stayed with you, and watch it grow.

A Spinosaurus, from egg to grown. Once it reaches juvenile, with 30 days of reading and six weeks together, it is yours forever.

There will only ever be 150.

One of each dinosaur in the Grand Atlas, each with its own number. When they are all born, there are no more.

  • Earned, never boughtA Makito can’t be bought, sold or given away. Only real reading counts, and the server checks it.
  • One per readerYours stays yours on a new phone: sign in and it comes back.
  • Kept by readingStop reading for 60 days before it is yours forever and it goes back to the Atlas. You get reminders well before that, and 30 more days to come back for it.

Questions

Something else? Write to contact@makareads.com

Do I need an account?

No. Everything works on your phone without one, even offline. An account (with Google, or Apple on iPhone) keeps a backup, brings your Makito to a new phone and lets you join the Journal.

Which books can I read?

Any book, on paper or as an ebook. MAKA counts your reading time and pages, not where the book comes from.

What if I stop reading for a while?

Before your Makito is yours forever, 60 days without reading sends it back to the Atlas. MAKA reminds you on day 30 and day 50, and it waits 30 more days just for you. Once it is yours forever, it never leaves.

Can I choose my dinosaur?

No: it is drawn at random from the ones still in the Atlas, so each Makito is a surprise and every reader has a fair chance.

Is there an iPhone version?

MAKA comes to Android first. The iPhone version follows later.

What happens to my data?

Your reading stays on your phone unless you create an account. We never sell data and use no tracking. The privacy policy explains everything in plain words.
